Schedule L Line by Line: Which Account Goes Where
Schedule L follows the same order on all three returns, but the line numbers differ because the 1065 has fewer equity lines and splits loans differently. Assets run from cash on line 1 to total assets on line 15, or line 14 on a 1065, and the contra accounts always sit on their own line rather than being netted.
| Trial balance account | Where it goes on the return | Watch for |

| Cash | Line 1 on all three | Includes undeposited funds |
| Accounts receivable and allowance | Lines 2a and 2b on all three | Never netted |
| Inventory | Line 3 on all three | Must equal Form 1125-A ending |
| Other current assets | Line 6 on all three | Attach statement. Prepaids go here |
| Loans to owners | 1120 and 1120-S line 7, 1065 line 7a | Its own line, deliberately |
| Buildings and depreciable assets | 1120 and 1120-S 10a and 10b, 1065 9a and 9b | Cost and accumulated separately |
| Intangibles and amortization | 1120 and 1120-S 13a and 13b, 1065 12a and 12b | Cost and accumulated separately |
| Accounts payable | 1120 and 1120-S line 16, 1065 line 15 | Trade payables |
| Debt payable in under a year | 1120 and 1120-S line 17, 1065 line 16 | Current portion, recomputed yearly |
| Other current liabilities | 1120 and 1120-S line 18, 1065 line 17 | Accruals, payroll, sales tax |
| Loans from owners | 1120 and 1120-S line 19, 1065 line 19a | 1065 nonrecourse loans are line 18 |
| Debt payable in a year or more | 1120 and 1120-S line 20, 1065 line 19b | Long term portion |
| Equity | 1120 22a to 27, 1120-S 22 to 26, 1065 line 21 | See the equity page |
One account at a time works until there are 200 of them.

The same shape, different numbers
All three returns order the balance sheet the same way: current assets, loans to owners, investments, fixed assets, intangibles, other assets, then liabilities from trade payables through owner loans to long term debt, then equity.
The numbering diverges because the 1065 handles two things differently. It splits loans to partners and mortgage loans into 7a and 7b, which shifts every later asset line up by one, and it collapses the entire equity section into a single line 21 for partners' capital accounts.
So a 1065's fixed assets are lines 9a and 9b where a corporation's are 10a and 10b, and total assets is line 14 rather than 15.
The contra accounts always get their own line
Four pairs, on every version of the schedule:
- Accounts receivable on 2a, allowance for doubtful accounts on 2b
- Depreciable assets at cost, then accumulated depreciation
- Depletable assets, then accumulated depletion
- Intangibles, then accumulated amortization
Netting any of them on the books destroys information the form specifically asks for. It is also why a trial balance that arrives already netted costs more time than one that does not: the figures have to be rebuilt from the depreciation schedule or the aging.
Both columns, every year
Schedule L reports beginning and ending balances. The beginning column comes from last year's return, and two lines in it are missed more than all the others:
Beginning accumulated depreciation, which appears nowhere on a current year trial balance.
Beginning owner loans, where repayments were netted in the ledger and never tracked.
A first year client with no prior return in the system has neither, which is why first year engagements start out of balance so often.
The current and long term split changes annually
Debt payable in less than a year sits on one line and debt payable in a year or more on another. For a term loan that means computing the principal due in the next twelve months from the amortization schedule, and the split moves every year as the loan amortizes.
Copying last year's allocation is the common shortcut, and a loan near maturity can be entirely current.
What Schedule L has to agree with
Inventory on line 3 equals the ending inventory on Form 1125-A. Total assets equals the figure reported in Item F or Item D on page 1. Ending equity equals beginning equity plus income less distributions, which is the Schedule M-2 roll forward. On a 1065, partners' capital on line 21 equals the total of item L across every K-1.
When one of those fails, the difference usually names the problem: search the trial balance for the exact amount, then for half of it.

Common questions
Why are the Schedule L line numbers different on a 1065?
Because the 1065 splits loans to partners and mortgage loans into lines 7a and 7b, shifting later asset lines up by one, and reports all equity on a single line 21 for partners capital accounts. Fixed assets are 9a and 9b rather than 10a and 10b, and total assets is line 14 rather than 15.
Can I net accumulated depreciation into the asset?
Not if you want to complete the schedule properly. The form asks for cost and accumulated depreciation on separate lines, and the same applies to the allowance for doubtful accounts, accumulated depletion and accumulated amortization.
Where do prepaid expenses go on Schedule L?
Other current assets, line 6 on all three returns, which requires an attached statement. The amount is the unexpired portion at year end, which has to be computed rather than read off the general ledger.
What should Schedule L tie to?
Inventory to the ending inventory on Form 1125-A, total assets to Item F or Item D on page 1, ending equity to the Schedule M-2 roll forward, and on a 1065 partners capital to the total of item L across all the K-1s.
