Why the numbers move between modules

Lacerte screens are numbered per module, so the same subject sits at a different number depending on the return. The balance sheet is the clearest example: screen 29 on an 1120S, screen 24 on a 1065, screen 37 on an 1120.

That catches people who prepare one entity type most of the year and then open another. The fix is to work from the subject rather than from memory of the number.

The screens a business return actually uses

The map above covers the ones a trial balance touches. A few are worth calling out because the obvious guess is wrong:

Officer compensation is screen 2, not the deductions screen. Screen 15 has a Compensation of officers [O] field, but it is an override that replaces what screen 2 computed.

Distributions are screen 8, not the Schedule M-2 screen. A total on screen 8 is split by the ownership percentages on screen 6. Screen 32 is the M-2 itself, and its distributions field is an override that produces a diagnostic when it disagrees with Schedule K.

Schedule K items are a block, screens 20 to 28. Interest income, charitable contributions, section 179 and nondeductible expenses all live there rather than on page 1, which is the single most consequential mapping decision on a pass through return.

Cost of goods sold is screen 14 on a corporation and screen 11 on a partnership. Intuit's own articles have used different numbers for this across versions, so confirm against the screen list in your copy.

Verify rather than trust a list

Screen numbers change between Lacerte versions, and Intuit's help articles do not always agree with each other. Two we found while writing this hub: the S corporation Schedule M-1 screen appears as both 31.1 and 27.1 in different Intuit articles, and the cost of goods sold screen number varies by article.

Where this page gives a number, it came from an Intuit help article for that module. Where your version disagrees, your version wins.

    Common questions

What screen is the balance sheet in Lacerte?

Screen 29 on an 1120S, screen 24 on a 1065 and screen 37 on an 1120. The companion screen that forces Schedules L, M-1 and M-2 to print is screen 30 on an 1120S and screen 25 on a 1065.

What screen are distributions in Lacerte?

Screen 8, Distributions and Loan Repayments, on an 1120S. A single total is split between shareholders by the percentages on screen 6, Stock Ownership. Screen 32 is the Schedule M-2, and entering distributions there as an override causes a diagnostic.

Where are the Schedule K items?

Screens 20 through 28 on an 1120S, with screen 20 covering income and deductions. Interest income, charitable contributions, section 179 and nondeductible expenses belong there rather than on page 1, because they are separately stated items that flow to the K-1s.

Do Lacerte screen numbers change between versions?

They can, and Intuit help articles sometimes disagree with each other on the same screen. Use the screen list inside your own copy of Lacerte as the authority, and treat any published list, including this one, as a starting point.
