Its own line, on purpose
Officer compensation is reported separately from the rest of the payroll on both corporate returns: line 12 on an 1120, line 7 on an 1120-S. Form 1125-E carries the per officer detail, and it is required once total receipts reach $500,000.
The form asks for each officer's name, percentage of time devoted to the business, ownership percentage and compensation. That combination is the point: it shows whether the pay is consistent with the work.
The line the IRS reads first on an 1120-S
Officer compensation at zero, with substantial distributions in the equity section, is the most recognizable pattern on a small S corporation return and the most commonly adjusted item.
The cost of getting it wrong is more than the payroll tax. A reclassification brings employment tax, penalties and interest, amended payroll filings, and effects on the qualified business income deduction, which depends in part on W-2 wages.
What counts as reasonable depends on the facts: the work, industry rates, hours, company profitability and what an unrelated person would have been paid. No percentage split is safe by itself.
What belongs on the line
Gross W-2 wages to officers, including bonuses, and health insurance premiums for a more than 2% S corporation shareholder, which are included in W-2 wages for income tax purposes though not subject to Social Security and Medicare.
What does not: distributions, which are equity; personal expenses paid by the company, which are distributions or a constructive dividend; non owner payroll, which goes on the salaries and wages line; and partner payments, which are guaranteed payments.
Partnerships do not have this line
A partner cannot be an employee of their own partnership. Payments for services are guaranteed payments, reported on line 10 of Form 1065 and line 4 of the partner's K-1, and they are self employment income to the partner.
So a 1065 with officer compensation on it has something mismapped, usually a payment to a partner that belongs on line 10.
What to tie it to
Officer compensation plus salaries and wages should reconcile to the W-3 for the year, with any accrual for days worked and not yet paid as the difference. The IRS matches those figures, and a mismatch generates correspondence that takes far longer to resolve than the reconciliation would have taken.

Common questions
What line is officer compensation on Form 1120-S?
Page 1, line 7, with the per officer detail on Form 1125-E. On Form 1120 it is line 12. Form 1125-E is required once total receipts reach $500,000.
Where does officer compensation go on a partnership return?
There is no officer compensation line. A partner cannot be an employee of their own partnership, so payments for services are guaranteed payments on line 10 of Form 1065 and line 4 of the partner K-1.
Is shareholder health insurance part of officer compensation?
For a more than 2% S corporation shareholder, yes, for income tax purposes. The premiums are included in W-2 wages, are not subject to Social Security and Medicare, and the shareholder deducts them on their own return.
What should officer compensation tie to?
The officers W-2s, and together with salaries and wages, the W-3 for the year. Any difference should be an accrual for days worked and not yet paid. The IRS matches these figures, so differences are worth resolving before filing.
